• In the late 1990s and early 2000s, I worked extensively with the Heritage Information Officer, Charles Mundy, at the Commandery Centre in Worcester UK. My commissioned work included The Spatula Story, a narrative of Roman life in the area during the first century CE, combining fact and fiction. This was a ‘virtual novel’, with chapters being posted on the Worcester Museum and Art Gallery website from January 2002 onwards. The project was part of Worcester’s Millennial History exhibitions, in association with the BBC History Zone. The audience for the ‘novel’ ranged from school-children to members of the public, with subsequent plans to develop a printed version and ‘resource packs’ for use in schools. There were twenty-six chapters on the museum’s website, and the The Spatula Story in its entirety has since been featured on www.24hourmuseum.org.uk
• A further collaboration with the Heritage Department, Worcester Museum and Art Gallery, led to my writing Assumption Eve, a drama based on one of the ‘Miracles’ of St Wulfstan, Bishop of Worcester (1062-1095) and Worcester’s patron saint. This was partly historical drama, partly pageant play, with scope for an extensive cast of actors.
• In the early 2000s I worked with the Tenants’ Federation in Dudley, West Midlands UK, under the auspices of the borough’s Urban Regeneration Scheme. This project involved running writing workshops for residents which focused on important aspects of their lives and experiences, and also developing narratives based on local issues for websites, newsletters and related media.
• The Ledbury Poetry Festival, July 2003 and July 2004. At the Festival, I ran courses on Twentieth Century Poets for writers and members of the public. These courses were very well subscribed, and they focussed upon such poets as Robert Frost, Robert Lowell, Wallace Stevens, W. H. Auden, Philip Larkin, Elizabeth Jennings, Stevie Smith and Ted Hughes. I returned to the Festival in 2012 to give a reading of my own work, which was most positively received.
• In October 2003, I was invited to participate in the Liverpool Irish Festival. I ran workshops on poetry and prose on the themes of ‘My Liverpool’ and ‘The Irish in the City’. A link to the Festival’s typical programme and highlights appears here: https://www.liverpoolirishfestival.com/
• BBC Radio: I have appeared on numerous BBC radio programmes over the years. One appearance was as part of the RAW project (Reading and Writing), 2006-07. I participated in discussions of children’s literature, the appeal of poetry for children, influential books from my own childhood and ways to make bedtime reading engaging and memorable. I read my own work, including poetry for both children and adults, to illustrate my contribution.
• I have since made numerous appearances on BBC radio, reading and discussing my work, including my 2021 fiction collection, Sing Ho! Stout Cortez: Novellas and Stories.
• The Robert Frost Poetry Festival, Key West, Florida USA, April 2004. I was guest poet at this annual event. My contributions included:
  — welcoming participants to the Festival;
  — reading from my work;
  — running poetry workshops;
  — giving radio interviews to promote the Festival’s Open Day, Sunday 18th April, 2004;
  — delivering talks on Robert Frost, Edward Thomas and the Dymock Poets;
  — participating in the award ceremony for the Festival’s poetry competition, which offered three categories: Junior High School, High School and Adult.
• My association with the Festival continued yearly until 2009. As a result, I became Poet-in-Residence at the Festival, an honorary title I still hold. I am also Poet-at-Large in the Navy of the Conch Republic of Key West.
